They thought Sauron was the real enemy- the one they had to watch out for. They thought that when they flew to Mordor on the Eagles and destroyed the Ring, that they had brought peace onto Middle-Earth at last. They thought that they didn't have to worry about evil any more, and that all was well.
They were wrong.
The Fellowship of the Ring is still together, in a sense. They are like a high council for all of Middle-Earth, watching over different places. Gandalf the Grey saved King Theoden from a mysterious disease, and now stays in Rohan. The other Fellowship members stay in their own homes, but stay in close contact with one another. They didn't expect something terrible to happen, but it did.
One day, Gandalf decided to visit a fellow wizard, Saruman the White. After going to Saruman for counseling before destroying the Ring only to find out that the wizard had turned evil and was working for Sauron, he left and kept an eye out for anything suspicious coming from Isengard. However, when Sauron was vanquished, Gandalf decided to go back to Saruman to see if he had changed his ways. He had not.
Now not only is Saruman still an enemy, but he is an enemy to be reckoned with. He has secretly been brewing an army of a new breed, called Uruk-hai, which are both goblin and orc. They are dangerous, and so is Saruman. With his newfound power, others have been succumbing to his grasp. He has gained powerful allies, such as the Steward of Gondor himself, Denethor. For a while, as Steward, Denethor trained his armies to fight for Saruman. He attacked Rohan first, only to be defeated and ejected from his place as Steward, replaced by Aragorn, the new king. Saruman was not detained, however, and soon afterward, captured the entirety of Mirkwood and now has it in his grasp.
Now it is up to you to decide the fate of Middle-Earth. Whose side will you choose? What will you stand for? Choose wisely, friend. Only one side will be the victor
